RACI Model

Definition

The RACI Model is a responsibility-assignment framework used to clarify stakeholder involvement in tasks and deliverables. It maps who does the work, who owns the outcome, who must be consulted, and who should be kept informed.

Core Ideas

The Four Roles

  • Responsible — the person doing the work
  • Accountable — the person with final ownership and decision authority
  • Consulted — people whose input is needed
  • Informed — people who should stay updated but are not directly involved in execution

Why It Helps

RACI is useful when projects involve many stakeholders and handoffs. It reduces ambiguity, helps prevent duplicated effort, and makes it clearer who needs to act versus who simply needs visibility.

Practical Guidelines

The source notes emphasize several operating rules:

  • one accountable person per task or deliverable
  • avoid giving one person multiple responsibility types for the same item
  • only responsible and accountable roles are mandatory for every task
  • map work clearly before assigning responsibilities

Where It Fits Best

RACI is most useful for:

  • large, multi-stakeholder projects
  • cross-department initiatives
  • highly regulated or coordination-heavy environments
  • situations where ownership is otherwise unclear

Where It Fits Poorly

The source material explicitly warns that strict RACI usage may not fit agile teams like Scrum teams well, because self-organizing or self-managing teams depend more on shared ownership and collaboration than on rigid top-down assignment.

Benefits

  • clarifies ownership
  • improves stakeholder communication
  • reduces confusion in complex projects
  • supports structured project planning and governance

Trade-Offs

  • can become bureaucratic if overused
  • may create bottlenecks if accountability is assigned too high in the hierarchy
  • can clash with highly collaborative agile team models when applied too rigidly

Relationships

  • Work Culture & Management — RACI is one of the explicit responsibility systems referenced in the work-culture notes
  • Stakeholder Management and Role Clarity — broader synthesis of responsibility systems, decision roles, and stakeholder alignment
  • Scrum — Scrum prefers team-level collaboration and may fit poorly with rigid RACI assignment
  • Agile — agile teams usually need lighter-weight responsibility structures than traditional project plans
